Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk allays injury fears ahead of season-defining month

Virgil van Dijk has brushed off concerns that he could miss Liverpool’s trip to Southampton on Friday due to injury.

The Dutchman appeared to roll his ankle during the second half of Sunday’s last-gasp 2-1 win over Tottenham - a result that took the Reds back to top spot in the Premier League.

Van Dijk collided into Moussa Sissoko after forcing the Spurs man into a wild shot from distance during a two-on-one situation late on, but completed the 90 minutes at Anfield without issue.

And, when asked after the match about the seriousness of the knock he took, the defender told the BBC: “I’m fine.”

Van Dijk’s fitness will be fully assessed at Melwood on Monday when Jurgen Klopp’s squad take part in a warm-down session.

If the 27-year-old’s predictions prove to be incorrect and he faces an enforced absence, he would no doubt be a huge miss for Liverpool at St Mary’s on Friday evening.

The No4 has played a major part in the Reds boasting the best defensive record in the league this season, with just 19 goals conceded after 32 games.
