Liverpool's ups and downs when Militant were in power

Although history tends to remember the Prime Ministers in Westminster, many of the decisions that affect our lives most deeply are made here on our doorsteps.

The latest episode of The Brink podcast looks at the decisions made by a left-wing Liverpool council in the early 1980s, and the passionate response they triggered.

The council's legacy includes much-needed housing and a supermarket creating jobs at a time of high unemployment, but also the disappearance of a treasured orchid house.

And in a city still reeling from the Toxteth Riots, the decision to appoint an outsider to a sensitive race relations role caused a furious backlash.

Julia Rampen's examination of the political landscape in our city in the 1980s continues with more in-depth interviews and analysis of what happened more than three decades ago.
