Liverpool's three-year wait for 'perfect Premier League weekend'

Liverpool beat Leicester City to go eight points clear at the top of the Premier League on Saturday.

Their nearest rivals Manchester City then lost to Wolverhampton Wanderers 20, securing the Reds' lead heading into the October international break.

Elsewhere, two of Liverpool's fiercest rivals Everton and Manchester United lost 1-0 to Burnley and Newcastle respectively -compounding both clubs' poor starts to the 2019/20 season and sparking joy across the Liverpool fanbase.

Blood Red: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on importance of Manchester United v Liverpool

It is a rare event for the Anfield faithful to see all of the teams they are naturally most concerned with being defeated while their own side is victorious.

And the last time that took place over a Premier League weekend was in February 2016.

Liverpool beat Aston Villa 6-0 on Sunday, February 14 with goals from Daniel Sturridge, James Milner, Emre Can, Divock Origi, Nathaniel Clyne and Kolo Toure.

Meanwhile, City lost 2-1 at home to Tottenham on the same day with United being defeated 2-1 at Sunderland on the Saturday along with Everton being beaten by West Brom 1-0.

Of course, the 2016 results didn't quite have the same ramifications as they did in 2019 but it was still a solid set of results all round back then it just now transpires that the Reds are in such a strong position defeats to their rivals taste even sweeter.
