Liverpool's summer transfer spending and how it compares to Chelsea, Man City & Manchester United

Liverpool brought in three new faces in this summer's transfer window.

Kostas Tsimikas, Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota all arrived at Anfield for the 2020/21 Premier League title defence - with the trio being signed ahead of deadline day on Monday.

It has been a relatively quiet window for the Reds in comparison to some of their top-flight rivals, with purse strings being tightened at some clubs more than others.

Sky Sports have been looking at the figures involved - and here are some of the headlines.

In total, Premier League clubs spent around £1.24bn on 107 permanent signings. That is £160m down on the same period last year, and represents a net outlay of £880m after some £365m was recouped by the sale of players.

Chelsea were the biggest spenders, splashing out a whopping £226.1m, including Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen for £75.8m - the most expensive individual signing.

The Blues also paid Leicester City £50m for Ben Chilwell and RB Leipzig £45m for Timo Werner.

Second behind Chelsea was Manchester City, whose £147m outlay included the signings of Ruben Dias (£65m), Nathan Ake (£41m) and Ferran Torres (£37m).

Next on the list was Aston Villa (£85m), followed by newly-promoted Leeds United (£84.5m), Wolverhampton Wanderers (£83.6m), Liverpool (£81.7m) and Arsenal (£81.5m) - the latter making a £45m deadline day swoop for midfielder Thomas Partey.

In contrast, Burnley only brought in Dale Stephens and Will Norris for undisclosed fees, with Brighton (£13.4m), Crystal Palace (£16m), West Ham (£20m) and Fulham (£23m) the next lowest spenders.

Of course, it should be pointed out that clubs also sold players in order to balance the books - at least, to some extent.

However, Chelsea's net spend was still way out in front at £212.6m, with Villa - who did not bring in any transfer fees - next on that list with £85m.

Wolves almost broke even with a net spend of only £7.6m, having brought in a league-topping £76m from player sales, including £45m from Jota.

Man City recouped more than £70m, while West Ham United actually made a £9m profit thanks to their outgoings, with Leicester £150,000 in the black.
