Liverpool's stance on Georginio Wijnaldum amid Thiago Alcantara transfer link

Liverpool are not looking to sell Georginio Wijnaldum - but they haven't opened talks with him over a new contract either, according to reports.

The Holland international is now in the final year of his contract, which he signed back in 2016 after joining from Newcastle.

Wijnaldum, 29, has been an important player for Liverpool in this time, netting twice in the Reds' iconic Champions League semi-final comeback against Barcelona.

But, according to the Tifo Podcast's Ask Ornstein show, contract extension talks are yet to take place on Merseyside, as Liverpool are continually linked with a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara.

If things remain as they are then the Dutchman will leave Liverpool on a free next season.

Wijnaldum was asked about his future back in January, and told Sky Sports: "I'm just focusing on bringing this season to a good end and that's the only thing I'm thinking of.

"What would I like? It is difficult to say. It depends on what the club wants and how the situation is at that time. We will see."

When asked if it would be hard to leave Liverpool, he replied: "Yes, it's like home."

Jurgen Klopp has been told he must sell before he can buy this summer due to the coronavirus pandemic disrupting the club's finances.

Thiago has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool, and would love to join the Reds ahead of the new season. But a transfer is unlikely to take place, with Klopp reportedly happy with his midfield.
