Liverpool's squad for start of pre-season confirmed - with only 16 players named

Liverpool will return to pre-season training at their Melwood base on Saturday and it seems like their could be plenty of space in the changing rooms.

The Reds squad have been enjoying some well-earned time off over the past few weeks after winning the Champions League title for the sixth time in Madrid last month.

A whole host of their players have been uploading pictures to social media of their holidays to far-flung destinations, with the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and James Milner travelling to the Caribbean and the US respectively.

However, with Jurgen Klopp's men looking to overhaul Premier League champions Manchester City over the course of the next few months, the hard work begins in earnest this weekend.

Owing to international commitments and other members of the squad being handed extended periods of rest, just 16 players will return for Liverpool on the first day of pre-season training.

First-team regulars Fabinho, Joe Gomez, Adam Lallana, Joel Matip, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are all down to be back in on Saturday.

Joining them will be Nathaniel Clyne, Anderson Arroyo, Ryan Kent and Harry Wilson, all of whom will be at Melwood after returning to the Reds following loan spells away last term.

Youngsters Rhian Brewster, Ki-Jana Hoever, Curtis Jones, Nathaniel Phillips and Ben Woodburn are another group due to report back this weekend.

New signing Sepp van den Berg will also be handed a first experience of training at Melwood on Saturday after joining from Dutch side PEC Zwolle.

The European champions are said to have beaten off competition from across Europe to land the talented 17-year-old.

Other members of Liverpool's Champions League-winning side will return to training at a later date as the Reds build towards the start of the new Premier League season next month.

Klopp's men will take on Tranmere Rovers in their first pre-season friendly on July 11.
