Liverpool's scouting strategy explained and why Reds already have their transfer targets lined up

Liverpool already have this summer's transfer targets lined up and are ready to swoop if given the green light from manager Jurgen Klopp.

However, the Reds remain unlikely to be spending big this window as they aim to keep the bulk of the squad that won a historic sixth European Cup on Saturday night in Madrid.

The recently-crowned European champions have this week confirmed exits for Daniel Sturridge and Alberto Moreno, with both players set for pastures new when their respective contracts expire this month.

The future of goalkeeper Simon Mignolet remains uncertain too, with the Reds likely to be fielding calls about the Belgium international's availability throughout the transfer window.

Mignolet has spent much of the last 18 months behind Loris Karius and Alisson Becker and made just two appearances last season in cup defeats to Chelsea and Wolves.

However, both Adam Lallana and Xherdan Shaqiri have confirmed their intentions to remain at Anfield beyond this summer, but Klopp may choose to enter the market at some stage to replace the departing Moreno and Sturridge.

Liverpool continue to be linked with a host of names on a daily basis, but the club's scouting network is run to ensure continuous forward planning remains at the forefront of the thinking.

Chief scout Barry Hunter and his staff plan two transfer windows ahead at Liverpool, meaning the club are currently scouting players for next summer as opposed to searching for footballers who can join the Champions League winners this year.

It effectively means the club's data-driven model has already earmarked the players Klopp could bring to the club during this summer's transfer window.

Extensive and exhaustive work has already been carried out on potential arrivals this window, although the Reds remain reticent to embark on another huge outlay like last summer's when around £170million was spent to bring Naby Keita, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alisson to the club.

As reported back in March, the ECHO understands that big-name links to the likes of Matthijs De Ligt and Paulo Dybala are wide of the mark.

Liverpool have been linked with both Ajax captain De Ligt and Juventus attacker Dybala in recent months, but the gigantic outlay required to snare both players won't be forthcoming from Anfield.

Instead, Klopp will merely seek to fine tune a squad that won the Champions League and finished their Premier League campaign with a club-record 97 points.

The Reds will be in the market simply to tweak ahead of the new season and a relatively modest outlay is anticipated after paying out close to £250m since January 2018.

Nevertheless, the Reds took supporters by surprise just days after the Champions League final last season by announcing the  signing of Fabinho from Monaco  in a deal worth around £40m.

Liverpool could potentially bank around £100m from sales with decisions set to be made on the future of fringe players such as Marko Grujic, Harry Wilson and Ryan Kent.

Nathaniel Clyne is another whose future is in doubt at the club, while youngster Rafa Camacho has indicated he is unwilling to sign a new contract and could be offloaded.
