Liverpool's rivals could help FSG save millions on big summer transfer

Liverpool's old enemies Toni Kroos and Ilkay Gundogan could do the Reds a favour this summer in their bid to sign Florian Neuhaus.

The midfielder had a release clause of €40million (£34million) when he signed a five year contract in 2019 but that clause is now believed to have expired.

Meaning that, should Liverpool decide to pursue a deal for the midfielder, the Reds would now have to negotiate a fee with Borussia Moenchengladbach to secure the German international.

And if Neuhaus makes it into the German team and performs well it is likely Moenchengladbach's asking price will rocket.

Liverpool are now relying on the most unlikely of allies to ensure that Neuhaus' price tag stays down.

Kroos, Gundogan and Neuhaus are all part of Germany's brilliant midfield for the Euros which also boasts Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich.

Jurgen Klopp will hope that his fellow patriots will have a successful Euro campaign and keep Neuhaus out of the German team. If both Kroos and Gundogan continually make it into the side and perform well it would limit the chances Neuhaus would have to prove himself on the European stage.

Kroos and Gundogan have long been a thorn in Liverpool's side. A Kroos masterclass during Real Madrid's Champions League clash with Liverpool last season knocked the Reds out of the competition.

As a key player for Liverpool's closest title rivals Manchester City, Gundogan has a history of upsetting the Reds. The midfielder was responsible for two goals during City's 4-1 win in February that ended their 17-match winless streak at Anfield.

Now both could actually help Liverpool this summer as the Reds look to secure Neuhaus.

The 24-year-old emerged as a potential target for the Reds in recent weeks, despite the ECHO understanding that signing a new midfielder to replace the departing Gini Wijnaldum is not a priority.

The Reds have been monitoring the Moenchengladbach midfielder and will continue to do so throughout the Euros.

Neuhaus broke into the Germany squad earlier in the campaign but did not make it off the bench during Germany's 1-0 defeat to France on Tuesday.

He will now be pressing for a starting role in the second group stage game against Portugal after Gundogan failed to find the net with one of Germany's only real chances in the first half.
