Liverpool's record with Champions League final referee will have Reds fans worried

Slovenian official Damir Skomina will be the man in the middle when Liverpool face Tottenham in the Champions League final at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid on June 1.

Both sides booked their place in the final in dramatic circumstances after launching unlikely semi-final comebacks.

Liverpool were 3-0 down after the first leg of their last-four clash against Barcelona at the Nou Camp, but rallied and progressed thanks to two goals apiece from Divock Origi and Gini Wijnaldum in a 4-0 second-leg win.

Spurs needed three in the second half of their second leg against Ajax in Amsterdam and managed it thanks to a Lucas Moura hat-trick.

Champions League final referee confirmed ahead of Liverpool vs Tottenham clash

Tottenham are bidding for a first European crown while victory in the Spanish capital would mark Liverpool's sixth - but the referee is not the greatest omen for Jurgen Klopp's side.

In five previous fixtures which Skomina has taken charge of, Liverpool have lost four, claiming just one win.

Skomina first refereed Liverpool in December 2009 as they were beaten 2-1 by Fiorentina at Anfield.

It was more than five years before he took charge of another game, overseeing the Reds' 2-1 loss at Besiktas in February 015.

He was in charge the following year when Liverpool lost at Villarreal and presided over the 4-2 second-leg reverse in the semi-final against Roma last season, although a big win in the first fixture at Anfield saw Liverpool progress to the final.

Liverpool's first and only win when Skomina has been the referee came earlier in this campaign as they beat Napoli 1-0 at Anfield in the group stage in December.

Skomina was central to one of the most controversial moments of this year's competition when he awarded a last-gasp penalty to Manchester United at Paris Saint-Germain as the Red Devils knocked out their French opponents in the last 16.

After consulting VAR, Skomina pointed to the spot and Marcus Rashford converted from 12 yards.
