Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho transfer clause explained amid conflicting claims

Philippe Coutinho and Barcelona were dumped out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage on Tuesday night.

A miraculous Reds performance saw the Anfield club overturn a 3-0 defeat from the first leg at the Nou Camp to run out 4-3 winners and progress to the final.

Reports surfaced shortly after the match that despite Liverpool bagging around £92.5million in reaching the final in Madrid, they missed out on a windfall included in the sale of Coutinho.

It was claimed that the Reds were in line to make €5million (£4.3million) from Barcelona if the Brazilian - who completed a £142million transfer to Spain in 2018 - reached the Champions League final this season.

Due to the Catalan giants failing to do this, Liverpool allegedly missed out on this particular payout.

However, the Liverpool Echo is now reporting that the Reds have already been paid this amount because the clause was actually triggered when Barcelona reached the quarters - not the final.

So what clauses are in place regarding the Coutinho deal?

Barcelona agreed to pay Liverpool a total of £35.2million in additional performance-related bonuses when they signed Coutinho in the 2018 January transfer window.

The first is appearance clause specific, with Liverpool set to earn £17.6million after Coutinho plays 100 times for the Catalan club.

The second is Champions League related, and saw the Reds earn £4.4million when Barcelona qualified for the European competition last season. They have already earned this same amount again as Barcelona repeated the feat this campaign.

And the final clause is also Champions League related, and would have seen Liverpool earn £4.4million if Barcelona won the competition last year, or this season. But as we now know, neither of these payouts will ever be triggered.
