Liverpool's only remaining medieval church and where you can find it

It's been standing in Liverpool for centuries and is now believed to be the city’s only remaining medieval church.

All Saints’ Church, in Childwall, is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building.

Believed to be the only medieval church remaining in the Metropolitan borough of Liverpool, it functions an active Anglican parish church in the south of Liverpool.

Reportedly, the chancel dates back to the 14th century with the south aisle and porch being later added on in the 15th century. It is thought that further additions were made to the architecture in the 18th century with the north aisle being partly rebuilt and a tower and spire being added.

The church is built in red sandstone and now consists of a west tower, a nave with a clerestory, a chancel, a south aisle and a much wider north aisle, which extends to the north of the chancel, and a south porch.

The tower has a large two-light window, a clock on three faces and two-light bell-openings.

In 2015, the church was used as the filming location for a storyline in the TV soap opera, Hollyoaks. Actress Nikki Sanderson performed a stunt, involving her regular character of Maxine Minniver, at the top of the church tower.

The church can be found at the north eastern tip of Childwall woods.

Along your travels through the woods, which is described as 'a lovely place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city in peaceful surroundings,' you'll find lots of woodland flowers including bluebells, marsh orchids and buttercups.

The church now runs services on a Sunday with morning sessions happening at 9.15am and 11am in the church and afternoon sessions at 6pm in the church hall.
