Liverpool’s newfound strength in defence applauded by owner John W Henry

Jurgen Klopp will no doubt be delighted to hear that the recent defensive improvements he has made at Liverpool have not gone unnoticed by the club’s owners.

Even in the midst of celebrating another baseball World Series win with the Boston Red Sox on Sunday evening, John W Henry found time to express delight over the recent progress made by his other sporting franchise.

The Illinois-born businessman has now overseen four championship victories with the Red Sox since taking charge in 2002 - the first of those ending a miserable 86-year drought.

Of course, Liverpool’s own painful wait for a league title win goes on, their last success coming in the 1989-90 campaign.

But Henry is confident that the tweaks made by Klopp during a summer of heavy investment have set the Reds up for a ‘special season’.

“Kiev was painful. But getting there, you could say we’re a little ahead of schedule,” he said.

“I think Jurgen has solved our defensive issues and we are really strong at the back and really strong in midfield and everyone knows how good we are up front.

“That, as well, is a very special team and it could be a special season.”

After beating Cardiff City 4-1 on Saturday, Liverpool sit top of the Premier League with 26 points from their first 10 games.

That points haul represents their best start to a Premier League season since 2008-09, when they went on to finish second to Manchester United.
