Liverpool's new MPs launch bid to stop S*n newspaper being read in Parliament

Two of Liverpool's new Labour MPs have called for new rules to stop The S*n newspaper being read in Parliament.

Newly elected Members of Parliament for West Derby and Wavertree, Ian Byrne and Paula Barker , have submitted an Early Day Motion calling for the removal of the newspaper from the Parliamentary Estate.

The motion has the backing of fellow Merseyside MPs Dan Carden , Kim Johnson and Bill Esterson - as well as Labour chairman Ian Lavery.

The S*n is reviled and boycotted around Merseyside because of its shameful coverage of the Hillsborough disaster .

The MPs' motion states: "That this house notes that, with great sadness, it has been 30 years since the Hillsborough disaster where 96 people were unlawfully killed; notes that The S*n newspaper's coverage of this event was widely criticised and that many retailers in Liverpool still refuse to sell the S*n; notes that some Members are survivors of this disaster or relations of survivors and resolves that The S*n newspaper should not be available for reading in public spaces around the Parliamentary Estate."

Announcing the EDM motion on twitter, Mr Byrne said: "Proud to have submitted an Early Day Motion with my colleague Paula Barker to request that The S*n newspaper be removed from the Parliamentary Estate.

"Great to see support from fellow Merseyside MPs and beyond."

Early day motions (EDMs) are motions submitted for debate in the House of Commons for which no day has been fixed.

As there is no specific time allocated to EDMs very few are debated. However, many attract a great deal of public interest and media coverage.
