Liverpool FC have released their new third kit for the 2021/22 season and people have been mocking the design by saying it reminds them of certain fast-food chains.
The yellow Nike shirt – a colour that hasn’t been featured on their kit since 2014/15 – channels some retro vibes with the addition of a red chequered v-neck.
In a statement on their website, the football club said: “The red-and-yellow chequered trim on the collar is inspired by the passion and energy of the Kop and the chequered flags that first illuminated the Reds’ end of the stadium at the 1977 European Cup final, which then set a precedent for all future big European nights. The subtle pinstripes highlight the tight bond between the club and its community.”

Since the kit was officially announced on the football club’s website this morning, people can’t help but notice the kit colours are oddly similar to a fast-food chain that will be forever associated with red and yellow – McDonald’s – with many suggesting that the outfit would be ripe for Ronald McDonald.
Ronald McDonald was soon trending on Twitter...

It’s possible to make a nice yellow and red kit, but you have to be very careful to not make it look like Ronald McDonald’s outfit. Nike have failed miserably on that part here https://t.co/kEjrwXtGhf

Meanwhile, the kit’s red checkered detailing – and the red and white background featured in the promotional photographs – reminded people of another fast-food establishment as they compared the new design to something a Five Guys employee would wear.
If @McDonalds and @FiveGuys collabed on a uniform 😩😐 https://t.co/PLFs2VzdQR

While some mocked the new third kit, other Liverpool fans shared their love for the design and dismissed the online trolling.
Love a yellow Liverpool kit. Don’t get why everyone is so against it

In the 1950s, the colour yellow was used “on a handful of occasions” at the club and quickly became part of the club’s regular alternate colour palette by the end of the 1970s, according to the Liverpool FC website.
Liverpool’s third kit is available for pre-order online here now and will go on general sale for purchase in-store and online from September 21.
