Liverpool's Naby Keita contract stance as 'unhappy' transfer rumours emerge

Liverpool are continuing talks with Naby Keita over a new contract for the midfielder.

Keita has entered the final 12 months of his current deal and, at present, would be able to open discussions with clubs from abroad from January.

Reports in Germany on Wednesday claimed Keita was unhappy with the negotiations over a new Reds deal, suggesting they had broken down while hinting he could leave before the transfer window closes on September 1.

However, the ECHO understands Liverpool have received no indication of Keita being discontent with his situation, and maintain a good relationship with the player and his representatives.

Regular talks are ongoing and are expected to continue with Jurgen Klopp keen to extend the Anfield career of the 27-year-old, who joined for £52.75million from RB Leipzig in 2018.

Liverpool have made contracts a priority with Harvey Elliott last week joining Joe Gomez and Mohamed Salah as recent high-profile names to extend their Anfield commitment.

With Liverpool short of midfield options due to an injury crisis that has seen Thiago Alcantara, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones sidelined, it seems highly unlikely Klopp would sanction the sale of Keita this summer regardless of the player’s contract situation.
