Liverpool's Mohamed Salah dismissed Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola's bizarre claim that winning Premier League is greater than winning the Champions League.
The two clubs slugged it out in the most intense title race in the history of English top flight football last season with City winning their last 14 matches in a row to pip the Reds by a single point (98-97).
However, this achievement was then eclipsed by Liverpool lifting the European Cup for a sixth time by defeating Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final.
Earlier this month , Guardiola compared Jurgen Klopp's side's Champions League triumph to a win on the spin of a roulette wheel, declaring: “I don’t want to go to the casino and gamble everything I have in my pocket for seven games”, adding: “The Premier League always is the most important thing, the local competition because it is every weekend.”
However, Salah insists that the Champions League – a tournament City have never progressed beyond the quarter-finals in – is the biggest competition.
He told CNN : “Honestly, I didn't know that he (Guardiola) said that, but I think if you give him a choice to choose which one, he would choose the Champions League.
“That's my opinion. I'm not talking about him, but my opinion. It's the biggest competition in football, so everyone wants to win it.
“Every coach, every player wants to win it, dreams of winning it. So of course the Premier League also is something big, but still the Champions League is the biggest competition.”
Salah, who is preparing for tonight's UEFA Super Cup game against Chelsea in Istanbul having netted Liverpool's opening goal in Madrid back in June, recalled the magical night for himself and his team-mates back in June.
He said: “Honestly, it was great.
“It's a dream for everyone, the city, the players, to win a Champions League is something so great and something very big.
“So everyone was having that special moment. I was feeling like a kid whose dream comes true.”
