Liverpool's mayor results are in after race goes to second round of voting - and the new boss has made history

The new city mayor for Liverpool has been announced.

Labour candidate Joanne Anderson has succeeded in becoming the next mayor, having previously being a councillor in the city.

The Princes Park ward councillor has made history as the first black woman to lead any major UK city.

She was victorious after the count went to second preferences, leaving just Ms Anderson and Independent candidate, Stephen Yip.

Previous mayor Joe Anderson - who is of no relation to the new mayor - stepped aside from the role due to an ongoing police investigation. He vehemently denies any wrongdoing.

The turnout was around 30.51 per cent, according to the Echo, and Ms Anderson secured 38.51 per cent of the vote.

In the second round, Ms Anderson secured 46,493 votes, with Mr Yip trailing behind with 32,079 votes.

The count for the mayor of the city region, meanwhile, starts tomorrow (Saturday), with the results expected from 12pm.

Steve Rotheram was the Liverpool city region mayor ahead of the election.

These were the candidates listed alphabetically:

  • Gary Cargill (Green)
  • Jade Marsden (Conservative)
  • David Newman (Liberal Democrat)
  • Steve Rotheram (Labour)

The count starts at 9am on Saturday, with the results anticipated within three hours.
