Liverpool's 'little magician' who is worst player to face in training

Xherdan Shaqiri is the one player Andy Lonergan didn't want to come up against at Liverpool training, claims the outgoing goalkeeper.

Lonergan arrived at Melwood to help solve the Reds' crisis in between the sticks.

Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane are the headline names at Anfield having scored 57 goals between them this season.

But Lonergan was not surprised by their quality, no doubt in part down to how evident their talent is, but did confess that he always hoped to be on the same side as Swiss star Shaqiri in training.

"No-one's surprised me because they're all unreal," Lonergan  told The Liverpool Echo.

"The one I really don't like facing is Shaqiri. When he's shooting, he can do whatever he wants with that left foot.

"I'm always thinking when we're doing five-a-side, 'Please be on my team,' because if he's against you, he's a little magician with his finishing."

Lonergan and Shaqiri are both set to be looking for new clubs this summer.

The forward headed to Liverpool two years ago after he left Stoke City following their relegation but has struggled to establish himself.

Shaqiri has scored seven times in 41 appearances over the past two years, although several of those have come from the bench.

The 28-year-old scored a brace as he proved to be the match winner in a clash against Manchester United in 2018.

But Switzerland boss Arno Rossi has hit out at Shaqiri for sitting on the bench during his club's success.

"Xherdan is not a champion," former FC Sion manager told Tio.

"We certainly cannot say that he left his mark with the teams with which he won. Not with the big guys at least. He was the protagonist in Basle, certainly not at Bayern or Liverpool.

"Let's say that over the years he has often followed the games of his teams as a spectator, sitting in the best places. And millions have also been paid for it."
