Liverpool’s LGBTQ+ community offered free name change service

Liverpool’s trans, non-binary and intersex community are being offered a free name change service.

The “game-changing” service will help people take the first important step in their social transition and is being delivered by Cheshire and Merseyside Adult Gender Identity Collaborative (CMAGIC) and MSB Solicitors. The two companies joined forces to offer their assistance to those across parts of the North West region.

While the process of name changing itself is free, individuals who wish to match their name on official documents to one that matches their gender identity, usually require help to complete online forms. As a result of this, companies offer their advice and guidance in return for a payment. However, in some cases, the individual’s money is wasted as often the documents don’t get accepted as they’ve been filled out without the help of a professional.

Now, trans, non-binary and intersex people over the age of 18 from Merseyside, Cheshire and Manchester will be able to have their name free of charge.

To complete the name change, individuals will need to provide:

  • Passport
  • Proof of address (driving licence or a utility bill)
  • One month’s bank statement(s)

The service will be on the first Wednesday of every month, from MSB Solicitors offices in Liverpool, Widnes and Manchester. Those wishing to use the service will need to book an appointment in advance.

Speaking of the new service, Anthony Griffin, Chair of CMAGIC, said: “This is a vital service that will prevent so many people from the trans, non-binary and intersex community needlessly spending lots of money on online services. For many it will also be game-changing as it will be an important first step in their social transition.

“MSB Solicitors is the only law firm that has gained the Navajo Merseyside and Cheshire LGBTIQA+ Charter Mark and it has supported the work we do at CMAGIC in so many ways. We are indebted to MSB’s managing director Emma Carey for supporting our latest endeavour, and Michael Boland and Poppy Hind who will be delivering this service.”

Emma Carey, Managing Partner at MSB, added: “I’m a firm believer that people should be able to be whoever they want to be, and that any potential barriers to them achieving that should be removed, however possible.

“At MSB, we’re always looking for ways to help our communities to become better, healthier and happier, in everything we do – whether it’s through our legal services, volunteering, or our pro bono activities. It’s so important that people are able to access the advice and support they need to help them on their journeys, and we’re delighted to be working with CMAGIC to deliver this service.”

The next sessions will take place on 1st June 2022, 6th July 2022, 3rd August 2022 and 7th September 2022.

For more information or to book an appointment, call MSB Solicitors Ltd on 0151 281 9040 and ask for Michael Boland or Poppy Hind.
