Liverpool's latest coronavirus infection rates as cases rise in nine wards

Liverpool’s coronavirus case rate is continuing to rise as fears of the Indian variant continue to dominate.

The council’s latest Covid update indicates that in the seven days up to June 1 there were 113 Covid cases, an increase of 58 cases on the previous week.

It comes amid continued warnings for people to exercise caution about the so-called Indian variant, which is believed to be accounting for a large number of new cases across the UK.

While Liverpool is nowhere near as badly affected as other parts of the North West, such as Blackburne and Bolton, the city’s infection rate has started to rise fairly sharply in recent days.

There are now nine wards in the city where the virus is not currently “suppressed”, with Picton and West Derby currently worst hit.

However, health experts are continuing to advise people that the available data indicates that vaccines are working well against the Indian variant, with its spread far more limited in groups with high levels of vaccinations.

Anyone over the age of 30 can now get their first jab – and health officials are asking people to ensure that they make sure to get their second when asked.

Experts say data is showing the second dose to be crucial in providing protection from the Indian variant.

The city’s public health chief, Matt Ashton, repeated that plea this week.

He said: “Vaccination is an essential part of our control measures.

“Please make sure you get your vaccine as soon as you are eligible, and encourage others to do the same! You need 2 doses to be immunised.”

Here are each of the neighbourhoods with the highest coronavirus rates in the city

Picton – 50.8 cases per 100,000 people

West Derby – 50.8 cases per 100,000 people

County – 50 cases per 100,000 people

Riverside – 46.8 cases per 100,000 people

Kensington & Fairfield – 45 cases per 100,000 people

Childwall – 36.7 cases per 100,000 people

Princes Park – 34.1 cases per 100,000 people

Belle Vale – 33.6 cases per 100,000 people

Central – 29.9 cases per 100,000 people
