Liverpool's key doubt on Ben White as Reds plot transfer move after Virgil van Dijk blow

Liverpool are reportedly considering a move for Brighton's Ben White in January - but are concerned about his lack of aerial presence at the back.

The Reds have been dealt a massive blow with the loss of their talismanic centre-back Virgil van Dijk after he suffered ACL damage from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford's horror tackle in the Merseyside Derby on Saturday.

Van Dijk is expected to be out for a number of months, and may not even be back in action before the end of the season.

With Joel Matip and Joe Gomez now the only two recognised centre-backs who are fit at the club, Liverpool are expected to open their wallet to sign another defender in January.

And according to Football Insider the Reds extensively scouted White over the summer, and he still remains very much on their radar.

However, they are worried that he does not perform well in aerial duels, and he is a very different type of defender to the colossal Van Dijk.

The 23-year-old impressed in the Championship on loan at Leeds last season, but despite the Whites making a number of bids during the transfer window he ended up staying with the Seagulls.

He has been an ever-present for Graham Potter's side at the start of the current campaign, but has been part of a leaky defence that has shipped 14 goals in six games in all competitions so far.

Liverpool may well be monitoring his performances over the coming months as they consider a bid, but they would likely have to spend in excess of £30m to land their man, given Leeds' bid of a similar figure was turned down.

It is believed White scores well in Liverpool's sophisticated data metrics, and the final say may come down to Klopp as he decides whether or not his lack of power in the air is something he is willing to gamble on or not.
