Jordan Henderson will discover on Wednesday the extent of the foot injury that forced him out of Liverpool’s win over Bournemouth, with the club’s captain doubtful for next week’s visit to Arsenal.

The Liverpool midfielder has been troubled by a foot problem since the beginning of the season and required painkilling injections to start on Monday having missed several days’ training in the buildup to the game. Henderson was substituted after 51 minutes of the 1-0 win when the injury flared up again and was sent for a scan on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old is expected to know whether he faces a spell on the sidelines on Wednesday, with the manager Brendan Rodgers facing possible disruption to his central midfield plans.

Liverpool have kept clean sheets in their opening two wins of the season, with Henderson’s partnership alongside James Milner contributing to their dogged start. With Lucas Leiva out of favour and Joe Allen injured, Emre Can would be favourite to come into the starting lineup on Monday should Henderson be unavailable.
