Liverpool's Joe Gomez could be one of world's best in next five years - according to FIFA 19

In June 2015, Liverpool spent a modest fee of around £3.5m on a relatively unknown central defender from Charlton by the name of Joe Gomez.

Just a few months later, Gomez would make his Reds debut away at Stoke City, before suffering an horrific anterior cruciate ligament injury in October 2015.

The talented defender made his injury return in January 2017, making 31 appearances in the 2017/18 season, but he did miss the 2018 World Cup due to an ankle injury.

This season, Gomez had established himself as a first choice centre-back alongside Virgil van Dijk, before suffering a fractured leg against Burnley in December.

Yet with Gomez now fully fit once more and ready to return to action, the youngster is set to remind everybody why he has become one of Europe's most promising centre-backs.

The sky is the limit for Gomez - but just how good could he become?

It is all speculation at this point, so we decided to add even more fuel to that fire - by using popular game FIFA 19 to find out.

Joe Gomez on FIFA 19 career mode at the start of 2018/19

Despite being first-choice for Liverpool this season, Gomez has only been given a 78 overall rating on FIFA 19, which he will have at the start of the game's career mode.

This is an overview of Gomez's profile.

His best attributes are his sprint speed (83), interceptions (81),  standing tackle (80), strength (80), marking (78), reactions (77) and sliding tackle (77).

He clearly has the basic attributes needed to be a solid defender, but compared to the top strikers in world football, he can be exploited.

Interestingly, on FIFA 19 Ultimate Team, he has a RB card but on FIFA 19 career mode he's best as a central defender.

Starting a new FIFA 19 career mode save with Liverpool, we then simulated five years into the future to see how good a player Joe Gomez could become.

This is what happened.

After five years of regular first-team football, with no major injures, this is what happened to Joe Gomez's attributes and overall ability rating.

Joe Gomez moves from 78 overall to an incredible 88 overall, becoming one of the best central defenders in world football.

To put that into context, Virgil van Dijk's current overall rating on FIFA 19 is 88 also.

And he wouldn't be far behind players like Giorgio Chiellini (90), Sergio Ramos (90) and Diego Godin (90).

The one song Gini Wijnaldum has on every playlist - and Liverpool fans will love it

His best attributes are now his sprint speed (99), sliding tackle (94), reactions (91), interceptions (89), short passing (89), marking (89) and strength (87).

Time will tell if Gomez can reach his undoubted potential - but he shouldn't be backed against hitting the heights he does in the virtual world.
