Liverpool's Jodie Comer tells Stephen Graham 'I owe you a pint' after winning Best Actress at the 2019 BAFTAs

Liverpool born Jodie Comer has been crowned Best Actress at the 2019 British Academy Television Awards (BAFTAs) for her performance in the thriller Killing Eve .

Jodie, who grew up in Childwall and took drama classes while at St Julie's High School in Woolton, shot to stardom after playing the multilingual "chic assassin" Villanelle in the hit BBC America drama series.

She seemed close to tears after winning the award, telling reporters with a tremble in her voice: "Sorry, I'm the only one to turn on the waterworks."

She also thanked Line of Duty star and Kirkby man Stephen Graham for his support in the early years of her career, saying: "Stephen, if I didn't owe you a pint before I definitely do now."

She reserved her biggest thank you to her family and dedicated the award to her grandmother, who passed away before the series was finished, saying: "Nana Frances you were absolutely right all along."

Viewers were tearful too, with one tweeting: "Crying watching her acceptance speech... such a lovely lady x. #didhernanaproud."

And another said: "My favourite Scouser wins a BAFTA and credits Stephen Graham in her speech... Class act."

Fans of the show on both sides of the Atlantic were surprised to realise that Jodie was a Scouser, when a clip from one of her first TV appearances surfaced last year .

A supporter of the Tyred campaign, she has previously said she is "proud as punch to be from Liverpool" and speak in a Scouse accent. She was recently spotted in Woolton Village hangout The Picked Olive .
