Liverpool's injury latest as several key men face fitness race for Leeds United clash

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will be sweating on a number of key players ahead of his side's season-opening clash against Leeds United.

Marcelo Bielsa's side will make their return to the Premier League at Anfield on September 12 as they play their first top flight game for 16 years.

They could not have been handed a tough assignment than visiting the Premier League champions, but may be aided by some key absences to the Reds.

Here is a rundown of Liverpool's injury worries in the build-up to the Premier League opener.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

The right-back out on Liverpool's pre-season tour of Austria and their Community Shield defeat to Arsenal at the weekend. Alexander-Arnold has been included in the England squad for their Nations League clashes against Iceland and Denmark, so will be hopeful of being fit to face Leeds on September 12.

Jordan Henderson

Liverpool's skipper missed the run-in with a knee injury and although he has been left out of Gareth Southgate's England squad, he is closing in on a full recovery and is set to return to full training this week.

Joel Matip

Another who missed the end of Liverpool's title-winning season, the German defender has not featured for the Reds so far this pre-season but is hopeful of being available to face Bielsa's side.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

The England midfielder has had his fair share of injuries during his time at Anfield and is a major doubt to face Leeds after he hurt his knee during the club's Austria tour.

Divock Origi

Another doubt for September 12 after missing out against Arsenal and in Liverpool's earlier friendlies against Stuttgart and Reb Bull Salzburg.

Xherdan Shaqiri

Another player beset by injuries in recent months, having not played since January. Yet to feature during pre-season.

Harry Wilson

Leeds are one of several clubs to be linked with the winger who was at Bournemouth last season, but a minor niggle kept him out of the Arsenal defeat.
