Becoming a tourist in your own city is a necessary step to appreciating where you're from.
A walking tour may seem like a sizeable chunk of your day dedicated to years gone by but when you start on the expedition, you'll never want it to stop. Aptly titled Liverpool's Famous Walking Tours, the company explore every inch of the city with no stone, ship or architectural ceramic untouched.
Those self-declared history buffs are guaranteed to still discover a thing or two as the tour strays off the beaten path to highlight hidden gems in back alleys and car parks while still delivering everything from the Three Graces to the Beatles.

Even though I've lived in Liverpool for going on seven years, with knowledge of more or less the key buildings and attractions under my belt, the detail the tour delivers across multiple centuries made me think I knew, in fact, very little.
This bespoke tour kicked off at the Pier Head, going in-depth on the Three Graces, their history and the general UNESCO heritage information. While this is expected from any tour, it soon bombards you with sports trivia and pop culture knowledge you wouldn't assume from something so historically driven.
A large part of the experience goes in-depth on the city's ties to slavery and the confederacy, showcasing how we still see signs of them today. Hidden confederate flags can be easily spotted if you know where to look, nudged forward by the guide to ensure even the worst history isn't forgotten.
Charming elements including figures, signage, and secrets woven into the architecture are given their moment to shine in otherwise mundane areas. Costa coffee doors are suddenly transformed into artistic masterpieces, "modern" elements of Liverpool One become references to the city's origins, and even the Liver birds appear in more places than one.
Liverpool's Famous Walking Tours covers far more than you might expect. It somehow fleshes out an already historically rich city even more by adding flair, charm and some serious messages to the literal streets below our feet.
