Liverpool's goal against Southampton would have stood with VAR - despite Mohamed Salah offside

Liverpool’s clash with Southampton this evening has attracted plenty of attention and a first-half full of drama provided plenty of talking points.

The hosts took the lead in the opening minutes through Shane Long and Liverpool faced a wealth of pressure from the Saints, who missed a number of opportunities to extend their lead, before pulling back in the game.

Naby Keita headed home his first goal for the club to equalise but the goal was a controversial one as replays showed Mohamed Salah was narrowly offside in the build-up.

While many on social media criticised the decision, adding that next season the goal would not have counted with Video Assistant Referees in place, but it has now been revealed that is not the case and Liverpool’s goal would still have stood.

"The VAR centre have told us that when it's introduced next season, this isn't a goal that they would disallow because the Southampton defence has a couple of opportunities to reset,” Sky Sports presenter Kelly Cates said at half-time.

As Salah ’s initial cross did not directly contribute to the goal, and Southampton had plenty of time to recover and clear the ball away, VAR would have allowed the goal to stand.

It shows that there will still be plenty of controversy next season even when VAR is introduced and it is unlikely to be the last we have heard on the matter.
