Liverpool's Gini Wijnaldum nets his first international hat-trick as Netherlands thrash Estonia

Liverpool's Gini Wijnaldum scored his first hat-trick in international football as he found the net three times in the Netherlands' 5-0 thrashing of Estonia at Ajax's Amsterdam ArenA.

Wijnaldum, who was captaining the side and led by example, fired the Dutch into a sixth minute lead before Bournemouth's Nathan Ake doubled their advantage on 18 minutes.

The Reds midfielder had to wait until the 66th minute for his second goal but then registered his treble 12 minutes later before 18-year-old Myron Boadu of AZ completed the rout three minutes from full-time.

Ronald Koeman's side had already qualified for next summer's European Championship finals thanks the point earned in a goalless draw with Northern Ireland in Belfast on Saturday.

However, their emphatic victory still did not give them top spot in Group C as their old foes Germany hammered Northern Ireland 6-1 in Frankfurt to finish two points above them.

Wijnaldum, who was without Anfield team-mate Virgil van Dijk after the defender withdrew from the squad for this game for “personal reasons” bagged the first three goal-haul of his career – although he has netted four goals in a game on two previous occasions.

In his first senior season, Wijnaldum hit four goals for his home city club Feyenoord in their 5-1 win over Groningen on February 27, 2011.

He has also achieved the feat once in the Premier League, for Newcastle United in their 6-2 win over Norwich City at St James' Park on October 18, 2015.
