Holland coach Frank de Boer will not allow Georginio Wijnaldum time off to complete his move to Barcelona after the Liverpool midfielder refused to deny reports he is set to sign for the club.
The Dutchman is out of contract at Anfield and, having failed to agree new terms, is set to leave the club when his deal expires.
A host of clubs from around Europe have been linked with the former Newcastle United man, including Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.
But Wijnaldum's agent, Humphry Nijman, and legal adviser, Jan Kabalt, arrived in Barcelona last week to open talks over a three-year deal.
Those talks are believed to have progressed well and the Dutchman, it is believed, has verbally agreed a deal with the La Liga club.
Wijnaldum is now training in Portugal with the Holland team ahead of the European Championship this summer.
But the 30-year-old’s move to the Spanish giants looks set to be delayed as De Boer is not allowing another of his stars to have time off to have medicals with clubs until after the Euros.
"Those players will have to be patient until after the tournament [to undergo their medicals]," De Boer told Voetbal International.
However, Wijnaldum, speaking to the Spanish press, refused to deny he has been in talks with the Camp Nou club.
He said: "I cannot deny the contacts. I have just signed off from Liverpool and it is an interesting situation for many clubs.
"My agent has been there and is in the picture. There is no denying that. But I can't say anything else about it yet."
Although no explanation has yet been given on his departure, Wijnaldum revealed after his final game for Liverpool, that he will tell the story behind the move at some point.
"The situation right now is that as of July 1st, I'm not a Liverpool player anymore. We will see what I will do in the next couple of weeks,” he wrote on social media.
“I will rest a little bit and then go to the national team. I will have a look at my story and how everything went. The fans deserve to know the story behind it."
