Liverpool's forgotten summer signing makes long-awaited return to training

One of Liverpool 's summer signings has finally began training with his new team-mates having suffered an injury before his arrival at Anfield.

Calvin Ramsay joined the Reds from Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen in the summer window. It was expected that he would fill the role of being Trent Alexander-Arnold 's back-up and challenger for the right-back spot in Jurgen Klopp 's side.

But Klopp disclosed soon after his arrival on Merseyside that Liverpool's staff had discovered that Ramsay was carrying an injury during his medical. Having missed all of pre-season, the young Scotsman is now finally training with his new club.

Ramsay confirmed the news on social media, releasing a photo of himself in training. The 19-year-old captioned the image with a message that appeared to be hopeful of featuring soon: "Back in full training. One step closer!"

When he arrived in a £4million deal from the Dons, Klopp hailed the youngster. And the Reds boss was hopeful that he would soon become a key member of his team, despite the fierce prospect of displacing Alexander-Arnold.

“Calvin is another exciting young player, so we’re very pleased. He has bags of potential. He is only 18 years old at the moment, although turns 19 soon and already has a decent number of first-team appearances for a defender of his age," Klopp said in July.

“He is athletic, smart, confident, with good technical ability and – always crucial – is eager to learn. So there’s lots to like. Experiences of European and U21 international football have been really important for him and his development, too.

“Signing so early in the window is fantastic for him as it means he’ll be with us for pre-season. That helps so much, particularly for a younger signing coming to us. He and we will have patience with each other.

"I think we have proved ours is the ideal environment to nurture and harness the qualities and talent of a young player. So we’re all really looking forward to working with him and seeing him improve and develop.”

It is unknown how long it will take for Ramsay to be get up to speed and be ready for match action. But with Liverpool facing a hectic run of 13 games in six weeks, Klopp will hope it will be sooner rather than later, though the German has insisted Ramsay will not be rushed back.

“When you are that young then of course he has a long career ahead of him, so we are very responsible in these moments, so he didn’t train yet with the team but is doing a lot of fitness work," he said in the summer.

"It will not take too long I think. So I didn’t see him yet in training but everything we saw about him, we heard about him, I heard from him: a fantastic boy. In his age group and you know the things we need from a full-back, he is as close as it gets to the things we want and is still a kid. So we really expect a lot from him in the long term."
