Liverpool's forgotten man Marko Grujic makes admission over Anfield future

Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic is set to feature in pre-season training with the club but his future is up in the air.

The Serbian international moved to Anfield in the summer of 2016 from Red Star Belgrade but has made just 16 first-team appearances for the club over five years.

He has spent the past four seasons loaned out at multiple clubs - and helped FC Porto reach the last eight of the Champions League last season.

It has been speculated that the Portuguese giants are interested in signing the 25-year-old on a permanent deal this summer but no transfer movement has yet materialised.

Grujic has been capped 12 times at international level for Serbia and is now at a vital stage of his career where he will be seeking regular first-team football and continuity.

The exit of Georginio Wijnaldum from Anfield this summer opened the possibility of a midfield slot being available next season which the returning Serbian could occupy.

He has now confirmed that he is currently preparing to be partaking in pre-season training with the Reds but admitted that his next step is uncertain and he does not know where he will be playing next season.

Grujic explained to Serbian outlet Sportske ahead of his return to pre-season: "I will soon join Liverpool ’s preparations, to do that basic part, so we’ll see the next step.

"We’ll see which club I’m going to play for, I don’t know at the moment, but as for the blue colours, I think I’ve done well in the last three seasons.

"Of course, it can always be better!"

The likelihood remains that Grujic is sold on a permanent basis this summer with Liverpool hopeful of securing a transfer fee and clearing the player from the wage bill.

Sales are likely to be necessary at Anfield in order for funds to be reinvested in the first-team squad and the reported interest from Porto may mean that now is the time for the club to cash-in.

In his interview he also spoke of his time in Portugal and sent a cryptic message that he may be open to returning to the club - who missed out on last year’s title to Sporting Lisbon.

Grujic has said that he regrets not playing in front of the club’s fans and he is ‘sure’ that he will pull on the club’s colours again.

He added: "I’m only sorry that I didn’t play in front of the fans.

"All my team-mates and people in the club say it’s a fantastic atmosphere, but my career is long and I’m sure I’ll have the opportunity to play at the Estadio do Dragao again."

Grujic spent the 2017-18 season on loan at Cardiff City in the Championship before spending the next two campaigns on loan at Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga - and he is likely to be on the move again this time round.
