Liverpool's Eleanor Rigby statue vandalised with multiple parts stolen

Parts of the Eleanor Rigby statue in the city centre have been stolen.

The famous statue, located on Stanley Street, was spotted missing multiple elements earlier this afternoon.

The Eleanor Rigby statue consists of a bronze figure on a stone bench reading a newspaper with a shopping bag on her right.

The bronze copy of the ECHO, which forms part of the statue, is currently missing from the bench.

The inscribed plaque behind the statue, which dedicates the work to the city, is also missing.

The tribute was designed and made by Tommy Steele and stands as a tribute to the hit Beatles song of the same name, which tells the story of a lonely woman, Eleanor Rigby.

The statue was erected in 1982 as a tribute to Fab Four.

The plaque behind the statue has been stolen previously and this would not be the first time the iconic landmark has been vandalised.

The City Council is aware of the missing parts of the statue.

The council confirmed to the ECHO that the statue is maintained by the council.

The council also confirmed that an officer is heading to the scene to assess the situation.
