Liverpool's drivers among least likely to overturn parking tickets

Liverpool drivers have some of the lowest chances of overturning a parking ticket in the country, newly released information suggests.

The proportion of parking tickets that are successfully appealed in the city is the sixth lowest in the UK at 23%, according to Freedom of Information requests.

That compares to areas like Lambeth in London and Milton Keynes where the success rate in appealing a ticket is 91% and 90% respectively.

Only Chelmsford, Haringey, Greenwich , Leeds and Waltham Forest have lower levels of success than Liverpool for drivers looking to overturn parking tickets.

English councils made £454m from on street parking penalties last year.

A Liverpool Council spokesman said: “Appeals are considered in accordance with legislation and supporting guidance and our own parking policies, and we do exercise discretion if appropriate.

“A low appeal success rate indicates that we only issue a ticket when appropriate.”

The FOI requests were submitted by car marketplace heycar.

Chief commercial officer Karen Hilton said: “If you know you were in the wrong, then it’s probably best not to waste your time appealing a parking ticket - but if your ticket genuinely blew over in the wind you could have a case.

“Although the process for appealing a fine is very similar all over the country, the decisions made by councils appear to be very subjective.

“So if you do genuinely think you have a case to appeal, then it’s definitely worth doing something about it.”
