Liverpool are in the midst of a defensive injury crisis, with Joe Gomez joining Virgil van Dijk as a long-term absentee at the back after suffering a knee injury on international duty.
Van Dijk has had surgery on an ACL injury suffered in the Merseyside derby clash with Everton in October and Gomez has also had surgery on his injury, with both players set to miss a significant chunk of the season.
Joel Matip has had his own fitness woes, while stand-in centre-back Fabinho is recovering from a hamstring problem.
Right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold is also sidelined with a calf issue, with the likes of goalkeeper Alisson and midfielders Naby Keita, Thiago Alcantara and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all missing games through injury so far this season.
Star man Mohamed Salah is also set to miss some games after testing positive for coronavirus while on international duty with Egypt.

Worst
The worst case scenario for Liverpool would involve them failing to bring in defensive cover in January and relying on Matip, midfielder Fabinho and the inexperienced pair of Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips.
Georginio Wijnaldum's future is still up in the air, with the midfielder's contract set to expire at the end of the season and Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman publicly admitting he is interested in a reunion with his compatriot, he could depart Anfield in January.
Dream
Unsurprisingly, Liverpool have been linked with a number of defensive additions in January, with Schalke's Ozan Kabak, Napoli star Kalidou Koulibaly and RB Leipzig's Dayot Upamecano on their radar.
Upamecano would arguably be the best option of the three and would be an excellent January signing.
If they can also keep hold of Wijnaldum then Liverpool would be well-placed to retain the Premier League title.
Realistic
Realistically, only Van Dijk and Gomez are expected to be out of action for an extended period of time and, provided there are no further injuries, Jurgen Klopp will have a very strong squad to pick from.
Fabinho would be able to slot in alongside Matip at the back, while the returns of Alexander-Arnold, Thiago, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Salah will be major boosts.
