Liverpool's Covid rates lowest in months but plateauing now likely

Liverpool’s coronavirus rate has continued to fall this week, though the city’s public health boss has warned infections may now plateau.

According to the council’s latest coronavirus report, Liverpool’s infection rate stood at 53.4 cases per 100,000 people in the week up to March 9.

Over that seven day period there were 266 Covid-19 cases reported in the city, a drop of 150 on the week before.

However, while the city’s rate is the lowest it has been in months, there are still areas with very high levels of infection.

The city’s public health director raised particular concern about infection levels in six wards which he said still had levels that were worryingly high.

Matt Ashton said rates in Belle Vale, Clubmoor, Picton, Princes Park, St Michaels, Warbreck were significantly above the city average and needed to come down further.

Speaking earlier this week, Mr Ashton also said he expected Liverpool’s rate to stay at around 50 cases per 100,000 people for the next week or so and warned the council would have to closely track how the return to in person learning affected rates.

He said: “Where we are now is our infection rate is down to 54 per 100,000, which of course is great news and much reduced from our peak on January 8 of over 1,100 cases per 100,000.

“It is a much improved position from that peak. I am not expecting our rates to reduce massively more.

“Over the last couple of days it has only come down a little bit so I do think we’ll be around 50 for the next week or so.”

Hospitalisations and deaths in Liverpool from coronavirus continue to fall, with the vaccination program in the city also continuing.

However, Liverpool continues to lag behind the rest of the city region in terms of the proportion of its population that have been vaccinated and health experts have raised concerns about pockets in the city where uptake of vaccines has been particularly low.

Leaders from across the city are encouraging people to take up the offer of a vaccine as soon as possible.

They are also encouraging people to ensure they are registered with a GP and that their details are up to date so that they can be contacted quickly as soon as they are eligible for an appointment.
