Liverpool's covid infection rate continues to fall after latest surge

Liverpool's Covid-19 infection rate has been steadily falling for several days.

The city has been experiencing a summer wave of infections, which began building through June and reached a high point earlier in July.

On July 7, the city's weekly infection rate reached 510 cases per 100,000 people - by some way the highest it has been since the devastating January wave.

Since that point it has been dropping consistently.

The latest infection rate for Liverpool, based on testing in the seven days up to July 24, is 367.8 cases per 100,000.

The total number of positive cases confirmed in the city in that period was 1832, a decrease of 686 cases on the previous week.

This is of course very welcome news, and hopefully shows just what an impact the vaccines are having in the city.

But there is still a lot of the virus around.

Liverpool's positivity testing rate remains high and has not come down as quickly as the infection rate.

The positivity testing rate is the percentage of positive tests returned of all of those carried out in an area - and is a good indicator of how much virus is in circulation in one area.

Liverpool's latest positivity rate is high at 12.5%, meaning that 12.5% of all tests carried out in the city were positive in the last week.

As a reference point, when Liverpool had its highest ever infection rate in early January, the positivity testing percentage reached 23%.

The most recent number has come down, but not significantly, from the high of 13.8% that it reached on July 22.

Health bosses will be watching this number closely and hoping it continues to fall.
