Liverpool's Covid cases continue to fall but deaths rise again

Liverpool’s coronavirus rate has dropped again this week in an encouraging sign for the city.

However, despite the city’s rate of illness standing at 723 cases per 100,000 people, lower than its peak earlier this month, the strain on hospitals is still mounting.

Liverpool recorded 3,601 new cases in the seven days up to January 18, a drop from 5,032 the week before.

In a positive sign, the council’s latest Covid-19 daily report showed that, based on a seven day average, new cases were down in 29 of the city’s 30 wards on Friday, compared to the week before.

Only Fazakerley’s rate was up on the previous week.

However, city leaders have continued to warn residents about the need to stringently follow lockdown rules, with hospitals facing weeks of intense pressure on their resources and staff and the number of deaths rising once again.

Hospital trusts across our region reported record numbers of Covid patients on their wards this week and Liverpool was no different.

Data from Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs the city’s three largest hospitals, shows that there were 566 Covid-19 patients across the trust on January 19.

The previous peak saw 475 virus patients being cared for at the trust on October 30, during Liverpool’s second wave.

In the first wave of the pandemic in the spring, the trust reached a high point of 390 Covid patients on April 13.
