Liverpool's coronavirus rate rises slightly as caution urged over Indian variant

Liverpool's coronavirus rate has risen slightly over the last week but remains much lower than neighbouring Sefton which has seen a recent surge.

The coronavirus rate in Liverpool stood at 11.6 cases per 100,000 people on May 11, according to the latest Liverpool Council update.

During the week up to that date, 58 cases were recorded in the city, a rise of eight on the week before.

However, while there was a rise, there are still only two Liverpool wards recording more than five cases and appearing on the council's coronavirus heat map.

Riverside has 25.5 cases per 100,000 people and Picton has 25.4 cases per 100,000 people.

The latest weekly rate of Covid-19 in Liverpool is 11.6 per 100,000 population and the latest positivity testing rate is 0.4%.

It comes as surge testing continues in neighbouring Sefton amid a rise in infections in Formby.

The Indian variant of the virus has been tracked in the Merseyside town as well as a number of other places across the North West, including Bolton and Blackburn.

The government is set to bring forward second vaccine jabs for some people in a bid to tackle rises in the variant but is facing pressure to open vaccinations up to wider groups in areas where the variant is rising.

That has happened to a lesser extent locally with a pharmacy in Ainsdale seeing huge queues yesterday when it offered vaccinations to all over 20s on a first come, first served basis.
