Liverpool's coronavirus rate drops as school return looms

Liverpool's coronavirus rate fell to its lowest point in three months this week as schools across the city prepared for the return of pupils to classrooms.

Liverpool Council's latest Covid report said that the city recorded 415 cases in the seven days up to March 2, giving the city an infection rate of 83.3 per 100,00 people.

It is the lowest level since the beginning of December and comes ahead of the mass schools' return on Monday.

Children across the city are set to go back to school next week, with testing and other regimes in place to attempt to limit the spread of coronavirus.

Public health director Matt Ashton said the figures were encouraging but reaffirmed the need for people to abide by lockdown rules, in place until the end of the month, to keep infections down.

Mr Ashton said: "“It is really positive news that our infection rate is continuing to fall and it is a reflection of the way in which the vast majority of us are sticking to the rules, so a big thank you to everybody as we know it has been a very tough 12 months so far.

“We’ve worked so hard to get to this point, and if we can just keep going it will put us in the strongest possible position when lockdown measures begin to be eased in the coming weeks and months."

A range of measures are in place as children return to schools, with testing and infection measures being implemented as children return to classrooms.
