Liverpool’s Champions League final heartbreak will help drive them to success this year, says Patrik Berger

Last season's heartbreaking Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid can only help Liverpool to go one step further this time around, according to Patrik Berger.

A memorable European campaign for the Reds came to a cruel end last May as they were beaten 3-1 by Zinedine Zidane's men in Kiev.

Two howlers from goalkeeper Loris Karius and an early injury to goalscoring talisman Mohamed Salah added an extra note of bitterness to an already disappointing evening for Jurgen Klopp and Co.

However, Liverpool's bid to make immediate amends is progressing well, with their quarter-final tie against FC Porto set to get under way at Anfield on Tuesday evening.

And Berger believes his former team are well placed to go all the way this season thanks to their experiences last year.

"The majority of the squad is the same, they experienced a Champions League final, they know what it takes to get there," he told Standard Sport.

"They know the feeling when you walk out and are playing for the Champions League trophy, so they’ll be more resilient, more confident, and will have the belief they can do it this year.

"I believe last year’s defeat can only help the boys to win it this year."

The Reds' chances this term were boosted by a last-eight draw that pits them against arguably the weakest team remaining in the competition.

Berger does not expect it to be quite as easy as some pundits are making out, though he is confident of progression to another semi-final.

He added: "Everyone is delighted with the draw because we could get much tougher opponents at this stage of the draw but it’s still going to be tough.

Liverpool v Porto: Champions League match preview

"Porto are a good team, have good players, and at this stage of the Champions League all the teams are good.

"It won’t be easy but I think Porto are very playable so I think at the end of the two rounds Liverpool will be in the semi-final."
