Liverpool's bizarre response to rule change in Premier League opener vs Norwich

Liverpool showcased a bizarre response to a new rule introduced for the Premier League season.

A law change coming into effect across football this season means players must now be at least a metre away from opposition players forming a wall during attacking free-kicks.

But Jurgen Klopp has come up with a new way to deal with being unable to infiltrate defensive walls - by forming their own wall a metre in front of their opposition.

The tactic was displayed when Liverpool got a free-kick on the edge of the Norwich box in the final 10 minutes of their 4-1 win.

With the Reds players using the novel approach to obstruct Tim Krul's view, their tactic almost worked with a smart save needed to keep out Trent Alexander-Arnold's effort.

It proved the first look at how the new rule change could impact the Premier League.

There was also a glimpse of the way teams can now play out of the back via new goal kick rules, which allow keepers to pass to defenders inside the area with strikers having to remain outside.

The Reds were accused of "making a mockery" of the new rule regarding attacking players interfering with defensive walls by fans on social media.

Others predicted that they "can't see it lasting" after a loophole was found almost immediately by the Reds.

Jurgen Klopp's side ran out as 4-1 winners in the opening game of the new Premier League season.

Norwich defender Grant Hanley deflected the ball into his own net early on to give Liverpool the lead, with Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Divock Origi all striking before half-time.

Teemu Pukki scored a second-half consolation for the newly-promoted visitors, but it was Liverpool who claimed three points to begin their campaign.
