Liverpool's big Champions League final advantage and why Reds must learn from history of heartache

Jurgen Klopp did his utmost to make it the abiding image of a miserable night.

With Liverpool's dreams of a sixth European Cup laying in rubble in the bowels of Kiev's NSC Olimpiyskiy, their manager was trying to alter the mood.

Hours after the defeat to Real Madrid, Klopp could be seen on video, partying away the disappointment, singing songs about his players and club with German rock stars.

For Klopp, it was a clear show of defiance to one of the most painful days in his management career, and the message was clear - this was just the start for him and his squad.

The footage was a welcome distraction for supporters, who unsurprisingly lapped up the antics on social media, but the real story of that crushing 3-1 loss 12 months ago wouldn't wash away so easily.

The same could be argued for the players, too.

The mere mention of Kiev is enough to bring the unwanted memories flooding back.

Memories of 44-goal Mohamed Salah leaving the pitch at his lowest ebb, inconsolable at the painfully sudden end to his glorious individual season.

Memories of a distraught Loris Karius, whose tear-soaked face seems sadly destined to be the image that defines his time as a Liverpool goalkeeper.

Memories of Dejan Lovren, the famously passionate defender, left in pieces at the sound of the full-time whistle.

Memories of James Milner and Virgil van Dijk, two of the more stoic figures in the Liverpool squad, almost reduced to waterworks of their own.

Fast forward a year and only Alisson Becker, Xherdan Shaqiri, Fabinho and Naby Keita remain unburdened by the pain of the 2018 Champions League final at Anfield.

But, 371 days on, Klopp and his players can use the hurt they endured in Kiev as fuel to ensure they aren't sitting in the depths of despair once more in Madrid on June 1.

Liverpool will step out for their first appearance at the Wanda Metropolitano in two weeks with the kind of experience that we're so often told is important in football.

In contrast, Mauricio Pochettino's Tottenham will enter the arena for their first-ever European Cup final.

Their lack of previous at the business end of the biggest competition in club football could be vital, either way.

Spurs' relatively youthful squad may be inhibited by the lofty position they somewhat surprisingly find themselves in.

Alternatively, their lack of European heritage might not shackle them when they meet a team who has already beaten them twice this season.

Either way, we will find out on June 1 in the Spanish capital.

For Klopp and his players though, they have to ensure the pain and heartache of last season's events act as wind for the sails.

Liverpool - this Liverpool, no less - have been on the losing side of a Champions League final before.

That acute sporting sadness simply has to be the driving force to ensure there is to be no repeat in Madrid.
