A Liverpool cafe rated the best in the city is serving up delicious breakfast bagels that will keep you full all day.
As well as winning over customers with its delicious food and pretty interior, Lucy In The Sky might just be one of Liverpool’s friendliest venues. This week I headed down to try it out and came away smiling.
The café is a small unit on Exchange Street East, just off Dale Street. Inside the owners have made the most of the space, with several well proportioned tables and clever lighting that makes everything feel warm and inviting. The retro wallpaper and neon lights are made for Instagram and there are pretty little design touches throughout.

Within seconds of stepping through the door, the woman behind the counter greeted me with a smile, handed me a menu and told me she’d be over to my table to take an order. There were several tables empty, but once I sat down that didn’t last long. By the time I’d ordered the place was all but one table full.
The breakfast menu includes a mega-sounding full English, with two bacon, two sausages, two eggs, two hash browns, beans, mushrooms and two toast, all for £8.50. There’s also a choice of omelette (£6.50), Eggs Benedict or Eggs Florentine (£6.50), Eggs Royale (£7.50), Avocado Smashed (£6) and various breakfast staples ‘on toast’. I decided on the Brekky Bagel (£6.50), which comes with egg, sausage, hash brown and cheese, and also ordered a tea (£1.90).

The café is run by Lucy, who - as she chattily explained to me while taking my order - is the daughter of original owner Margy. The tea arrived just moments later, steaming away in a large pot with a small jar of milk and biscuit on the side.
It wasn’t much longer before the huge Brekky Bagel arrived and it was like the kind of thing that can cure a hangover (not that I had one) just by looking at it. It was so big, there was no chance of me picking it up, so I tucked into it with a knife and fork.
To be honest it all got a bit messy, falling apart as I ate it, but it was no bad thing. The bagel was perfectly toasted and nice and chewy, and the eggs were cooked just right - soft, fluffy and well seasoned.
The sausages were on the small side and didn’t taste particularly fancy, but there were two of them and they weren’t overly fatty. There was perhaps a bit too much Red Leicester cheese for me - the whole thing was covered in a large melted slab of the stuff - but it was easy enough to remove some of it.

The hash brown was deliciously crisp but crumbled somewhat under the pressure of the rest of the bagel. Seeing as I was eating it with a knife and fork it didn’t really matter. Having such a large pot of tea was a godsend as it meant I was able to keep topping my cup up while working my way through the mammoth bagel.
Once I’d finished - and polished off the biscuit that came with the tea - I was absolutely stuffed and stayed that way for hours. It certainly set me up for the day and I didn’t feel hungry until well into the afternoon.
As well as breakfast, Lucy In The Sky serves hearty lunches, including pasta bake, soup, baked potatoes and sandwiches. There’s also homemade cakes and they even serve a quirky ‘Wheelie Bin Milkshake’ (£3.50), which comes in a miniature version of the city’s famous purple wheelie bin.
Following my visit I can certainly see why it’s the number one café in Liverpool on TripAdvisor. The friendly service would have me coming back alone, but thankfully the food is just as memorable.
