Liverpool's Ben Woodburn told 'this is serious' after mixed start to Oxford United loan spell

Oxford United forward Cameron Brannagan has backed Ben Woodburn come good in his latest loan spell, but says the Liverpool starlet has to find a clinical edge in front of goal.

Woodburn has largely been a hit since arriving from Anfield earlier in the summer as he tries to get his career back on track following a disappointing loan spell at Sheffield United last season.

However, he was guilty of a glaring miss during the 1-0 win over Peterborough United at the weekend, blazing over from close range after James Henry's chip had come off the crossbar.

The miss arguably blew a hole in what was otherwise a strong performance from the teenager, who's since been warned that he cannot afford to be so wasteful in front of goal in future.

Brannagan is confident the Welsh winger will come good, but says he simply cannot afford to allow chances like that to go begging.

"I told him ‘this is serious, those chances have got to go in the net’," he said.

"Ben knows that. You’ll miss chances of course and he was gutted.

"I just said ‘the next one you’ve got to put away’. Ben’s living with me now so I’m looking after him and he’s a top kid."

Woodburn's move to League One comes following a disappointing loan spell at Bramall Lane last season, which saw him make just 11 league appearances for the Blades, starting just one game before returning to Liverpool in January.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is understood to still be a keen admirer of the Welshman, and will no doubt be keeping a close eye on his progress at the Kassam over the coming campaign.
