Liverpool's Anfield 'snubbed' as venue for England warm-up match ahead of Euro 2020

The FA have reportedly snubbed Anfield as a venue for an England fixture in the build-up to Euro 2020.

England are set to go on the road for a friendly against Romania on Sunday 7 June, with Wembley handed over to UEFA ahead of the tournament.

It is expected that the Three Lions will travel to the north of England, but they are struggling to nail down a venue.

Liverpool's Anfield home would be free, but it is reportedly deemed off limits by association chiefs due to their ongoing ban on journalists from The Sun.

Reporters from the newspaper have not been welcome at the stadium since February 2017 on the back of their historic coverage of the Hillsborough disaster.

The ban extended to The Sun's rugby journalists, who were unable to cover the Super League Magic Weekend which was held at Anfield earlier this year.

Rugby chiefs accepted Liverpool's ban on Sun journalists, but the FA do not want to get involved in what they see as a private dispute.

As a result, they are reportedly unwilling to change their stance and will not consider Anfield as a host venue.

Liverpool have not hosted an England match since 2006, when Uruguay were the visiting side.

FA bosses now face a race against time to nail down a venue for the clash with Romania.

Newcastle's St James' Park is the most likely venue, but an agreement is yet to be signed to stage the game there.

Manchester City and Manchester United were also considered as hosts for the fixture.

But the Etihad Stadium is closed for renovation work on the pitch, while Old Trafford is already booked out for the annual Soccer Aid match.

Everton's Goodison Park has not been considered as an option due to access issues and the dated facilities.
