Liverpool’s plans to redevelop the Anfield Road stand of their home ground remain on track despite the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Last month, the Reds completed the second stage of public consultation on a £60m expansion that would see an extra 7,000 added to the stadium’s capacity.
The first stage of that process saw concerns raised by residents regarding plans to permanently close a section of Anfield Road to traffic.
However, a revised design showing the street rerouted around the expanded stand’s footprint was more warmly received.
With the blessing of local residents and businesses secured, the next step for Liverpool involves applying for planning permission with the local council.
And Standard Sport understands that the Reds intend to begin that process in the next week, despite the uncertainty caused by the spread of Covid-19.
Building work on the club’s new first-team training base in Kirkby was halted earlier this week, casting doubt over its scheduled summer completion date.
But, with council sign-off still required on the plans for Anfield, that particular project remains on schedule for now.
Consequently, Liverpool remain hopeful of beginning construction on the expansion in late 2020, as per their original timeline.
Should that prove to be the case, then the target of opening the stand in time for the 2022-23 season is still achievable.
