Liverpool's Andy Robertson admits regret over 'disrespecting' Lionel Messi: 'I ruffled his hair a wee bit'

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has spoken of how he once ruffled Lionel Messi's hair and regrets being "disrespectful" to the Barcelona star.

The Reds pulled off one of the most famous comebacks in Champions League history, winning 4-0 at Anfield having trailed 3-0 from the first leg at Camp Nou.

Messi had put the Merseyside outfit to the sword at Camp Nou with two late strikes, including a superb 30-yard free-kick which seemed to have put Barca in touching distance of the final.

But Jurgen Klopp's side mounted an incredible comeback in their home fixture, with Divock Origi scoring a brace to stun the Catalans.

To pile on the misery for Messi, Robertson was involved in a minor disagreement with the 33-year-old and bizarrely ended up ruffling his hair - something the Scottish full-back now regrets.

On the one-year anniversary of the famous European triumph, Robertson recalled how it felt going up against the Argentine star.

“We both ended up on the ground and I ruffled his hair a wee bit," he told That Peter Crouch Podcast:

"He wasn’t too happy, but it’s something I wouldn’t do again. It’s just disrespectful to the best player that’s ever played the game.

"I do regret it, but it’s something that everyone relates to me now. I wasn’t thinking clearly.”

Liverpool went on to beat Tottenham 2-0 in the final in Madrid but saw their hopes of retaining their title this year dashed after losing 4-2 to Atletico Madrid in the last-16 knockout round.
