Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has sustained an injury which will rule him out of the Community Shield clash against Arsenal.
The midfielder has been training with the Reds at their pre-season camp in Salzburg, Austria ahead of friendlies against RB Salzburg and Stuttgart.
However, the 27-year-old sustained a knock to his knee following a challenge from a team-mate.
Oxlade-Chamberlain has now returned to Melwood after his latest injury setback to begin rehabilitation with the club's medical team.
Klopp admitted he "didn't know" when the England international would return, but said he will not recover in time for the match against former club Arsenal at Wembley on August 29.
It also raises doubts as to whether Oxlade-Chamberlain will be ready in time for the start of the new season on September 12, with Liverpool facing newly-promoted Leeds United on opening day.
"Unfortunately we have one of those situations where it was a challenge and it looks like it's very similar to what Hendo [Jordan Henderson] had," Klopp told the club's official website.
"It gets him out for, we don't exactly know how long, but for sure this pre-season he will not make a game, for sure not Arsenal.
"We will see when the next game is, probably two weeks later. I don't know, we have to wait.
"It is far away from being perfect and of course it's really hard for him, hard for us, but it is not to change."
