Liverpool's £84m transfer spend truth as Curtis Jones can solve Naby Keita problem

Here is your Liverpool morning digest on Wednesday, February 10.

Jones can answer Keita question

Jamie Carragher raised the point on Monday Night Football that Liverpool have several key players who have clocked an obscene amount of minutes on the pitch over the last few years.

The ex-Reds defender suggested that the team needs some fresh faces in the summer and pinpointed that Gini Wijnaldum is going to need replacing should he leave Anfield at the end of the season, when his contract expires.

While they aren't the same type of player by any means, Curtis Jones could be the man to replace Wijnaldum.

The 20-year-old has shown in recent games why he perhaps deserves a permanent spot in the Reds' midfield and he looks as if he has the durability and consistency that Jurgen Klopp desperately needs right now.

Jones' time in a red shirt is a stark contrast to Naby Keita's, whose injury record while being at Liverpool is ridiculously unfortunate.

Keita's time at Anfield has been riddled with knocks and he has been deprived of the chance to find a rhythm and a consistency to his play, but Jones certainly has.

There's a directness to the Liverpool-born midfielder's play, something that many thought the Reds were getting when Klopp signed Keita for £48million.

The £84m transfer truth

Liverpool's drop off in form this season can be put down to several things, with many people suggesting mental and physical fatigue may be the reason behind the champions' recent downfall.

However, according to the figures on Transfermarkt, the Reds - since winning the Champions League back in 2019 - have been provided with just £83.75million for incoming transfers by owners Fenway Sports Group.

Diogo Jota (£40.23m), Thiago Alcantara (£19.8m), Kostas Tsimikas (£11.7m), Ben Davies (£1.67m), Ozan Kabak (£990k loan fee), Takumi Minamino (£1.71m) and Sepp van den Berg (£1.71m) have all arrived at Anfield in that time.

In the same time frame, runaway leaders Manchester City have spent £299.15m on new players, seriously addressing their big problems - with, most notably, Ruben Dias coming to the Etihad Stadium for £62m.

Manchester United have spent £279.25m since the Reds were crowned champions of Europe for a sixth time and are now looking like much more of a serious title challenger under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Chelsea - who were hit with a transfer ban in the summer of 2019 - have spent £263m on incoming signings, with the likes of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell and Edouard Mendy all arriving for big-money fees last summer.

With those figures, there is certainly a debate to be had that Klopp's side's slide was inevitable and it highlights how huge this upcoming summer transfer window is set to be for the Reds.
