Liverpool's 2019 poster boy underlines exactly why Reds need to spend this summer

Divock Origi is up next as the ECHO continue to rate Liverpool players' seasons so far.

Divock Origi was Liverpool's poster boy of 2018/19.

While he only really dealt in glorious cameos, so much of the glittering highlights reel belonged to him.

This campaign has been quite different, however.

He has featured more but scored less overall.

Origi has had more of an impact in the season's subplots - Arsenal in the League Cup, Everton in the FA Cup - compared to the key Champions League role he played last term.

Yet there is also his star performance in the remarkable 5-2 win in December's Merseyside Derby to take into account.

That brace just about bumps him up to a 7/10.

Divock Origi is a hard man to rate.

You have to rate Origi for moments, rather than performances. Because Big Divock is all about the big moments.

Need a last minute goal? Have a big game looming? Is it the Merseyside derby? Divock Origi is your man.

Sadly for the Belgian, Liverpool are in need of those big moments less and less and he's becoming a peripheral figure at Anfield.

Indeed, he's just not doing enough from the start of games to really put pressure on Liverpool's front three.

Two goals against Everton aside, there's been precious little to get excited about for Origi this season.

Five goals in 36 appearances isn't an impressive return and it underlines where the Reds need to invest this summer.

Somebody like Timo Werner could see Origi's position at Anfield come under threat and it would be no surprise if he departed.

Just make sure you bring him back on loan for the derby. Or if Barcelona are in town.

Probably for the first time in his Liverpool career, Divock Origi entered a new campaign with an air of expectation on his shoulders.

The Belgian international stunned world football with his brace against Barcelona in last season’s Champions League semi-final - and lets not forget his goal against Tottenham in the final in Madrid.

Jurgen Klopp opted not to bring in another striker to compete with Roberto Firmino, which gave Origi an opportunity to become a regular figure in the matchday squad.

The opening day against Norwich City saw the 25-year-old start due to Sadio Mane only recently returning from Africa Cup of Nations duty with Senegal.

Origi found the back of the net once, and played a part in Grant Hanley’s own goal in the early minutes of the Premier League opener at Anfield.

Since then, Origi has had to settle mostly for a bit-part role under Klopp, making just 12 starts in his 36 outings.

His last goal was part of a sublime brace in the 5-2 win over Everton in December, but failed to score in his 18 appearances since then.

An up-and-down campaign for Origi, and one that probably has not gone as well as he would have liked.
